Surface and Bulk Electronic Structure of ScN(001) Investigated by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy/Spectroscopy and Optical Absorption Spectroscopy

چکیده
ScN(001) 1×1 surfaces have been prepared by growing ScN on MgO(001) using radio frequency molecular beam epitaxy. In-situ ultra-high vacuum scanning tunneling spectroscopy indicates that the Fermi level at the surface lies slightly above the Sc 3d conduction band edge, which is attributed to a downward band bending at the surface. In-situ scanning tunneling microscopy is used to image the Sc and N atom sublattices. While only one atom (Sc) appears at small negative bias, both atoms (Sc and N) appear at certain positive sample biases due to the partially ionic nature of the bonding. Charge accumulation near ionized sub-surface donors is evident from the long range topographic distortions at the surface. The combination of tunneling spectroscopy and optical absorption results show that ScN has an indirect bandgap of 0.9 ± 0.1 eV and a direct transition at 2.15 eV.

This work describes the optical and structure properties of nickel sulfide and cobalt sulfide nanoparticles in ZSM-5 zeolite. The samples were obtained by sulfidation of the Ni2+ and Co2+ ion-exchange ZSM-5 zeolites in a Na2S solution at room temperature. The optical properties of the samples were studied by UV-visible spectroscopy. Their crystalline structure and morphology were studied by X-r...
متن کاملInfrared spectroscopy of molecular submonolayers on surfaces by infrared scanning tunneling microscopy: tetramantane on Au111.
We have developed a new scanning-tunneling-microscopy-based spectroscopy technique to characterize infrared (IR) absorption of submonolayers of molecules on conducting crystals. The technique employs a scanning tunneling microscope as a precise detector to measure the expansion of a molecule-decorated crystal that is irradiated by IR light from a tunable laser source. Using this technique, we o...

متن کاملThe physical and chemical properties of ultrathin oxide films.
Thin oxide films (from one to tens of monolayers) of SiO2, MgO, NiO, Al2O3, FexOy, and TiO2 supported on refractory metal substrates have been prepared by depositing the oxide metal precursor in a background of oxygen (ca 1 x 10(-5) Torr). The thinness of these oxide samples facilitates investigation by an array of surface techniques, many of which are precluded when applied to the correspondin...

The atomic configuration and electronic band structure of Pt-induced nanowires on a Ge(001) surface are investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy, reflection high-energy positron diffraction, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. A previously proposed theoretical model, composed of Ge dimers on the top layer and buried Pt arrays in the second and fourth layers [Vanpoucke et al.,...
